Visitor Reviews This review submitted by Niels Johs Legarth Iversen: November 2000 While Berlin was divided the inhabitants of the East zone could not visit the original Berlin Zoo, which was situated in the West zone, and therefore the communists looked for a place to make their own zoo. They chose the park of Schloß Friedrichsfelde in the far East of Berlin. It was in many ways a good choice, as it gave the new Tierpark an fine open character with lots of space for the animals (160 ha), and besides the castle itself and the formal garden in front of it lend an air of cultural sofistication to the place which many zoos lack. The reverse of the medal is the long distance to the center (or centers) of Berlin. If you are a new tourist in Berlin with limited time, chances are that you visit the Zoo right beside the busy Bahnhof Zoo, rather than the tranquil Tiergarten somewhere far out East. But Friedrichsfelde is a fine zoo in its own right, and fully deserves the 1.3 million visitors it receives every year. As in the Berlin Zoo the general organizing principles seems to be zoological rather than geographical. It has an especially fine collection of hooved animals, including a herd of przewalski, but carnivores, apes, birds and reptiles are also well represented. They assert that they have got the largest collection of poisonous snakes in Europa. To get out to Friederichsfelde take the U-Bahn right to the Bärenschaufenster ('bear showcase') entrance.
