Tallinn Zoo lies on the western outskirts of the city. The
visitor number lies around 600.000 a year, probably mostly locals, – I doubt that many
tourists find their way out there (though bus 21 and trolley 7 will take you right to the
entrance). There are surely some nice things things to be said about this place. I don’t
think the animals suffer, they looked well fed and well kept when I visited the place in
1999. I saw a keeper walk along with a string of goats behind him, happily trotting along:
apparently even some sense of humour. Enclosures are generally big, and there is ample
space for development. So what is wrong with this place, then? I’ll tell you: it’s BORING.
The layout is uninspired, and there is not enough vegetation (apart from a brim at the
east side, where they keep their fine collection of owls). Maybe in some years it could
look more appealing, if they let things grow, but right now most of the area is taken up
by a grid with a path left, a path right and some empty connection lanes. They really
ought to break up this rigid structure. As for the animals I remember the large collection
of hoofed animals, deer, oxen, goats and so on, with the emphasis on animals from the
temperate and polar regions, which is a fair choice given the geographical location of the
town. The african animals are at the far end of the grounds, and they comprise elephants
and rhinos plus a couple of pygmy hippos. I have read that the zoo has got a new tropical
house since my visit, which would be a welcome addition since there were relatively few
indoors exhibits when I was there.
One strange thing: they have got an internet site, but it seems to be inaccessible (www.zzz.ee/zoo/eng.html). Did they forget to pay
their webhotel ??
