Hirtshals in the Northernmost part of Jutland is a small windy town with a fishing harbour and ferry lines to Norway. But it has one big attraction: The North Sea Center (Nordsøcenter) just south east of the town center. As the name suggests it is not just an aquarium, but also a research institution. As an ordinary guest what you see is called the North Sea Museum, but the museum part of it is rather subordinate, – it really is an aquarium. There is an outdoors sections with seals. Inside you find the 'old' aquarium (from 1984) and an exhibition about food from the sea.. plus the newest addition, the oceanarium. I have seen many fine aquaria around the world, so you have to come up with something quite spectacular to make me go whaauw, but this thing does it. It is basically a large tank with 4,5 million liters of sea water, in which large schools of fish incessantly swim round and round while solitary sharks move around in the opposite direction below them. When you stand just in front of the largest window, you cannot see anything but the water (which is 8 meters deep), and you quite literally feel you are standing in the middle of the ocean. The old aquarium is more traditional, not bad, but it does not overwhelm you like the oceanarium. does. You don't find tropical fish in the North Sea 'Museum', – its purpose is to teach you just about everything there is to know about the North Sea, and that it does. In 1998, where the Oceanarium opened, 440.000 people came to see it.
