Visitor Reviews This review submitted by NIELS JOHS LEGARTH IVERSEN, September 2000 At Lolland you will find Knuthenborg Park, founded by the eccentric count Eggert Christoffer Knuth after 1864. Apart from a 7 km long wall it owes its magnificent botanical variety to that period. Especially the rhododendrons of Knuthenborg are famous and probably draws as many visitors as the animal collection. The first foreign animals arrived by boat as late as1969: some antelopes, zebras and ostriches from Kenya . I was there with my family shortly after, and I primarily remember how an donkey tried to stick its head into our Volkswagen beetle. Later came other African animals, such as white rhinos. Since then Knuthenborg has become one of the main zoos of Denmark. It is a spacious park, and you do get the feeling of an African reserve when you drive around it. If you haven't got a car there are bus tours available inside the park, – ask at the ticket booth. In recent years it has started to develop thematic areas where you can walk around. For instance there are no less than 21 volieres with all kinds of birds inside, and there is a spectacular tiger enclosure where you can drive around in your car or in a safari bus (in Givskud they have lions, so Knuthenborg had to get the tigers to get even!). But here you must roll up all windows. In summer there is a veteran railway line from Maribo to Bandholm right to the Bandholm entrance Submit a review. [Click Here]
