Visitor Reviews Review submitted by Phil Eadie Hi there thought you might like to hear about our recent experience at Saigon Zoo. We visited the Saigon Zoo on two occasions in April 2006 with our two young children and were pleasantly surprised. Having been visiting Saigon since the mid 90’s we had heard poor reports of the zoo but it seems that things are very much on the mend. The token entrance fee of about 8000 VND (about USD0.40) was a small price to pay for a couple of peaceful hours walking around visiting the animals. Certainly some of the enclosures have seen better days – most notably the big cat enclosures are poor by modern standards and really are little better than cages. There is also a relative lack of information and signage, a printed map would have been useful to find your way around, and the path is a bit broken up in places that made pushing pushchairs a bit hard going. On the plus side there has obviously an effort to improve the zoo in recent years with several enclosures – giraffes, elephants, bears and horses receiving reasonably plush new surroundings. The deer enclosure is particularly impressive as visitors are guided over the top of the enclosure on an elevated walkway offering great viewing opportunities. Children would particularly enjoy the petting enclosure that is open for a couple of hours in the morning and again in the afternoon and offers the usual collection of domesticated animals (sheep, pigs etc.). Without a doubt the zoo still has a long way to go but with some further improvements both to animal and visitor facilities it should offer a very pleasant half day out and even now is well worth a visit if you have children to entertain.
