Korkkeasaari is a small round island with another island Hylkysaari as kind of a satellite. On this last even smaller island there is a Marine Museum with several ships spread around plus a museum building. There is a separate (modest) fee to see this. You can get to the zoo by zoobus 11 from the Herttoniemi metro station, or you can walk 1.8 km from the Kulosaari matro station, or if you have your own car you can park at the Mustikkama bridge which leads to the island of Korkkeasaari. However between May and September I strongly advise you to take the ferry from the far end of the central Market Square (Kauppatoori), which leaves every full and half hour. In this way you will see the Helsinki waterfront, and that is an attraction in itself. Let's assume you come by ferry. The folder you get take the stance you should continue uphill to the center of the island. I propose an alternative route: follow the 'beach promenade' right, which lead you past chamois, ibex, reindeer and wolwerines to the bridge to Hylkysaari (decide whether you want to see it now). In the breeding season mind the attacking gulls! Continue along the water past elks, wisent, fallow deer, zebra - hey, there we slipped into a bit of Africa! Here you find the Aquarium, and after that the path turns towards the rocky center of the island. Part of the fun is jumping around on the rocks up here and looking out. From the top pavillion, walk downwards to the right to the South America house. From here you can walk clockwise around the island at mid altitude, and in the process you will pass a section with lots of birds, later the baboon castle and musk oxen, and keeping at this altitude you end up at the far end of the big cats valley, which leaves you close to the landing area. This is the end of the route, but feel free to walk it once again along the official route. There are cafeterias or restaurants in several places.
